BELLOWS FREE ACADEMY FAIRFAX DRIVER EDUCATION COURSE REQUIREMENTS
A. Students enrolled in Driver education are requested to bring a parent/ driving coach or legal guardian to the course registration meeting to be held at the beginning of the semester.
B. A parent/coach will be asked to assist with guided driving practice at home and some other at home activities. The parent/coach is asked to sign the behind the wheel guided activity sheet to indicate that the student completed the activity in order that the student may be given credit.
C. Students are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction. Failure to meet these requirements will result in a grade of “Incomplete” for the course.
D. Students will be required to do assigned readings, written homework assignments, projects, study sheets and demonstrations in preparation for behind the wheel and classroom activities. Written work that is handed in after the due date will be given half credit unless the student has an excused absence indicated by a note from his/her parent or guardian.
E. Attendance at all driving sessions is mandatory to complete the required 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction. In order to facilitate rescheduling of driving time, advance notice should be given to the instructor, if a student knows (s)he will be absent. Students who are not driving will be in study hall 3 days a week. Thus, students should plan to utilize this time to do driver education projects and homework or other assignments. The study hall time can be used for independent study but this must be arranged by the student with the supervising independent study teacher.
F. Participation in classroom and behind the wheel activities is expected and required.
G. Students are REQUIRED TO HAVE A VALID LEARNER’S PERMIT prior to the first class. The learner’s permit must be in the students’ possession and presented to the instructor before behind the wheel instruction proceeds. If students forget their permits, five (5) points will be deducted from their final grade.
H. Students must be prompt for driving. Students who are not present at the start of the assigned driving time will be left behind and reported as absent for the day. Block one driving will begin promptly at 8:15 am. Block two driving will go until 11:20 and block three driving will begin at 11:30.
I. Students will not bring books, backpacks etc. into the car due to limited space. These items may be stored in the trunk.
J. All occupants of the vehicle must wear seatbelts as stipulated in Vermont statutes.
K. Horseplay will not be tolerated in the Driver Education Vehicle.
L. The DRIVER EDUCATION VEHICLE is a mobile classroom. Consequently, students shall follow the rules of appropriate conduct as stated in the policies of BFA and in the student handbook. This includes respect for all occupants with the understanding that we all learn by making mistakes.
M. Vermont motor vehicles laws must be observed at all times by students enrolled in the Driver Education course.
N. The following conditions will lead to dismissal of a student from the course:
1. Failure to abide by Vermont motor vehicle laws.
2. Misuse of or intentional damage to Driver Education materials, equipment, or vehicle.
3. Insubordination by a student.
4. Impairment of any kind while behind the wheel which compromises the safety of the occupants of the Driver Education vehicle.
5. Student driver under the influence of alcohol and or drugs during any instructional phase of Driver Education will be referred to the school nurse and/or a school administrator.
O. Use of mind altering substances
Consistent with state and federal laws, Fairfax Town School District Directors believe:
A. Every student has the right to a substance-free school and that it is the responsibility of the entire community specifically: students, parents and school personnel to work together to achieve this goal.
B. A student’s use of substances is detrimental to the education of that student and is likely to be detrimental to the education of other students and detrimental to the safety and well being of the entire school community.
C. Substance abuse and dependency are treatable health problems and the school’s responsibility is to provide preventative education for all students, intervention (identification and referral) for those students using substances, and support for those students attempting to maintain their
recovery.
In conjunction with the philosophy expressed above, all students in the driver education program at Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax will remain substance free during all phases of the driver education program. Any student who smells of alcohol or marijuana or is suspected to be under the influence of any mind altering substance will be referred to the nurse and/or an administrator and parents will be notified. Students may be dismissed from driver education if found to be under the influence during driver education and will be referred to drug/ alcohol screening before being allowed to enroll again in the program the following semester.
We are all in this together. Let’s support one another toward the goal of safer highways.
