Introduction (Move Now, Move for Life)
Physical education should allow students to develop an appreciation for movement, skill, and attitude that will lead to life long physical activity. Physical educational at the middle school level raises the bar of expectations. At the primary level students learned concepts like space and boundaries and skills like striking a ball or jumping. These are now put into practical use in game like situations or individual and dual activities.

Content
Activities or units at this level include: soccer skills, football skills, basketball skills, dance, personal fitness, volleyball skills, softball skills, orienteering, juggling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. This list is not exclusive and may change as space and weather permit.

Standards Addressed
The standards that will be addressed on a continual basis are: Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings, Understands that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self expression, and social interaction, and demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings (NASPE standards, Vermont 3.6 and Vermont GCE’s) other more specific standards will be addressed on an unit by unit basis.

Grading
Grading will be based on several factors for each unit: that may include: tests/projects/homework 20%, skill or concept rubrics 40%, class participation and preparedness 40% (see class expectations).

Class Expectations
1 = <60 No participation or effort
2 = 60 to 70: Little participation after much urging and no effort
3 = 70 to 80: Some participation and little effort or not prepared with improper clothing or footwear
4 = 80 to 90: Full participation and full involvement
5 = 90 to 100: Full involvement full involvement and encouragement of others through out the class.

These scores will be recorded after each class.

Each student is expected to achieve at least a 4 on a regular basis. I do realize that some day a change of clothes may be forgotten or a student may be feeling sluggish. It becomes a concern when these behaviors become the habit, and parents may be notified. Proper clothing would be clothes that allow for a full range of motion with out being revealing or falling off. Proper footwear are shoes that support the foot and of the sneaker variety, NOT SANDALS.

Concept or Skill Assessment
During each unit, students will be asked to demonstrate at least two skills or concepts that are the focus of each unit. These may be assessed in with teacher cues or during game play. The rubrics will be made available at the beginning of each unit.

Tests
There will, when appropriate, be one after each unit. Due to limited p.e. time with the students and no appropriate space to conduct the exam, I require students to take the assessment as homework. It will be due back within one week of distribution. I make every effort to have the students enter the assignment in their homework log. Finally extra copies are available outside my gym.

Projects
As assigned to put into practical use the skills learned, an example would be the maps created for the orienteering unit.
