Learning to Read
I remember the look of the unreadable page
the difficult jumble
and then the page became transparent
and then the page ceased to exist:
at last I was riding this bicycle all by myself.

Mrs. Aceto, Reading Recovery, Title 1
Hello! My name is Penny Aceto and I am a Reading Specialist, and trained Reading Recovery teacher, here at BFA Fairfax. I have been working as a Reading Specialist for the past 6 years and have worked at BFA for 2 years. I received my Master’s Degree in Education/ Reading from Saint Michael’s College in 2005.
As a Title 1 Reading Specialist, I work with students who are most in need of reading/writing support. I provide supplemental reading/writing instruction in small groups. This instruction is in addition to the regular classroom program. I set literacy goals for my students and measure their progress throughout the year. This year I am working with students in first and second grade.
As a Reading Recovery teacher, I provide a short-term early intervention program to first grade students who are having difficulty learning to read and write. Reading Recovery provides one-to-one tutoring, five days per week, for 30 minutes a day. The instruction lasts an average of 12-20 weeks. (See the description of Reading Recovery on the next page).
