NAME ORIGINS UNIT
Many students find it boring to learn the origins of words. However, it is not only a large component of the SATs that they will eventually take, it is also a huge help with decoding words in their reading that are unfamiliar to them. Latin and Greek roots are the most useful, but other languages can also play a key part in understanding.
In this unit, students will research the meaning of their names, and hopefully have an interest sparked in knowing the meanings and origins of words. This unit will link to a larger unit we do in 8th grade on Latin and Greek prefixes and suffixes.
Students will most likely need to ask family members questions about why they were given their names, and some basic information about the family tree. If this is of concern to you for any reason, please contact me at school.
The final booklet the students make is intended to be a fun and education product. After all, one of the topics middle schoolers are most interested in is themselves!
