Orienteering Outline

Overview

The propose of this unit is to introduce students to the sport of orienteering and the skill of using a compass.  The students will be introduced to compass reading skills and learn how to apply them during practical learning activities. (in the 6^th grade this unit is taught in cooperation with the social studies class.  The orienteering unit is designed to give the student the skill to use a compass so they may participate in a variety of outdoor activities and add to their safety.

Learning Objectives Rubric

1)    Student does not understand the use of numbers on a compass and can only give directions by using north, south, east and west

2)    Student uses numbers but is inaccurate (+ -20 deg.).

3)    Student uses the gives the directions in degrees and is accurate but miscounts paces.

4)    Student is accurate in steps and headings
