Overview

The propose of this unit is to introduce students to the sport of orienteering and the skill of using a compass.  The students will be introduced to compass reading skills and learn how to apply them during practical learning activities. (in the 6th grade this unit is taught in cooperation with the social studies class.  The orienteering unit is designed to give the student the skill to use a compass so they may participate in a variety of outdoor activities and add to their safety.

 

 

 

Learning Objectives Rubric

 

 

 

 

 

1)    Student does not understand the use of numbers on a compass and can only give directions by using north, south, east and west

2)    Student uses numbers but is inaccurate (+ -20 deg.).

3)    Student uses the gives the directions in degrees and is accurate but miscounts paces.

4)    Student is accurate in steps and headings
