Special Education Referrals Policy

Warned: November 27, 2003
Adopted: December 8, 2003

Policy
It is the policy of the District to provide a systematic referral process for any student suspected of having a disability and in need of special education services. The procedures for the special education referral process are as follows:

  1. Anyone concerned with the education of a student (including, but not limited to, the classroom teacher, principal, nurse, special educator, parent, etc.) has the responsibility to make a written referral for a special education evaluation if he or she suspects the existence of a handicapping condition interfering with the student’s academic achievement. Under appropriate circumstances, a verbal referral will be considered.

  1. All special education referrals are made to the Special Educator or principal who has the responsibility for appointing the Evaluation and Planning Team.

  1. Parents/Guardians will be notified of this referral and be included as members of the Team.
