Ways to Assist Your Child At Home

Strategy Questions for Parents to Use

When a Child Reads to Them

 When a Child Stalls:

 Parent will say:

  •  Try that again and think what would make sense.
  •  Check the picture.
  • Try that again and start that word.
  •   You may need to use all three prompts.

When a Child Misreads Part of the Text:

    Parent will say:

  •  Try that again.
  •  Can you find the hard part?

  • Check to see if what you read looks right and sounds right.

If a child can not figure out the word after the above prompts, just tell him/her the word.

DON'T ASK THE CHILD TO SOUND OUT THE WORD. You may suggest that the child check the initial or ending letter, or the middle of the word.

After the child corrects a word and  rereads the sentence, please ask, "Is that right? Does it make sense?"
